Hazardous material (referred to outside the United States as "dangerous goods") is any type
of solid, liquid or gas that can be harmful to people, the environment or any other living
organisms. Hazmat can be radioactive, flammable, explosive, toxic, corrosive, biohazardous,
an oxidizer or an asphyxiate, or it may have other characteristics that make it hazardous in
specific situations.
The U. S. Department of Transportation (DOT)
regulates the transportation of hazmat within
the United States. The Occupational and Health Administration
(OSHA)
regulates handling of
hazmat in the workplace. The Consumer Product Safety
Commission (CPSC)
regulates hazmat in
products sold for household and other consumer uses.
